ISEET to replace IIT JEE and AIEEE
[Updated With Full Coverage]
“Goodbye JEE, welcome ISEET from 2013″ – This news has added to the imbroglio student had been facing for so many months. If this article is to be believed, ISEET (Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Test) is going to replace IIT JEE and AIEEE altogether.
According to this article, ISEET will have two parts – Main and Advance, each of three hours duration. While ISEET Main will be an objective type exam and will test comprehension, critical thinking and logical reasoning, ISEET Advance will test problem-solving ability in basic science subjects. The two tests together will indicate a candidate’s scholastic level and aptitude for science and engineering.
Both tests will be given on the same day, between 10 am and 5 pm. ISEET 2013 will be held in either March or April.
The news does not end here. Now Class 12 Board exam will also be considered in the evaluation. The weightage will not be less that 40 percent. That means the combined weightage for ISEET Main and Advance will not be more than 60%.
It needs to seen how the evaluation committee would normalize scores from various boards for Class 12 exam. Some boards are generous in distributing marks while some boards aren’t so. Also, with introduction of ISEET Main, students will have to start preparing for comprehension, critical thinking and logical reasoning. This type of test will resonate more with CAT (Common Admission Test) user for admissions to IIMs.
IIT JEE is considered one of the toughest exam by students and usually students start preparing for it while starting with Class 11, some students start even earlier. With the introduction of ISEET, students will have to manage two things – Class 12 board exams, ISEET Advance test which will be mainly problem solving in Science subjects and ISEET Main, a completely new vector for students.
Lets hope we get more clarity on ISEET as soon as possible and end the confusion face by students.
Update 1: It also seems that ISEET will be conducted by CBSE board and not by IITs
Update 2: The Centre has decided to go ahead with its decision to conduct the ISEET (Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Test) from 2013 as was announced earlier.
Update 3: Though ISEET will be conducted and managed by CBSE, test papers will be set by IITs
Update 4: Minimum 40% score must in XII board examination to appear for ISEET
Update 5: The name will remain same as before (JEE – Joint Entrance Examination)
Update 6: IITs are not happy with the decision (Source: Financial Express)
Update 7: Minutes of minutes of IITK senate meeting held on Feb 15th (Senate Meeting Minutes). Very valid points raised by the members and echoes well with our post - Is Scrapping IIT JEE (And Introducing ISEET) An Answer To All The Questions?
Update 8: CBSE chairperson Vineet Joshi and the director of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) clarified that the ISEET is a work in progress. Joshi said that ISEET is likely to be available twice a year — in April/May, and then later in the year for students who miss the first round (Source: Hindustan Times)
Update 9: From the same source above, the Maharashtra state government has decided to do away with the Maharashtra state Common Entrance Test (MH-CET) for engineering courses from 2013 and adopt ISEET for engineering admissions in the state
Update 10: IITs questioning the new patter of JEE entrance exam. ISEET seems to have hit rough weather due to opposition from some IIT managements. Most state governments had given their consent for replacing the entrance exams with common entrance exams. However, some IITs and their student senates have expressed displeasure over the way the change was being initiated.(Source: Indiatimes)
Update 11: A meeting will be held by HRD department on April 11 to resolve the issues regarding ISEET. IIT directors, representatives of the faculty federation and some other faculty members have been invited to attend the meeting. This meeting will be followed by IIT council meeting on April 14. Reportedly, there are couple of divergent issues between government and IIT bodies. IITs think that giving inclusion or weightage of 12th std marks for selection process is not practical. Also, IITs do not approve of using only objective type questions in the test. In addition, IITs have also expressed concern over CBSE managing the entrance test. (Source:Economic Times)
Update 12: IITB received a draft from HRD ministry before the seven member panel from HRD meet the faculty on Monday (April 9th). The draft contains the basic contours of the changes in the JEE, including dates for the exam (April 7, 2013) and the modalities of sub-committees that will be in charge. Faculty of IITB are going to raise their objections before the committee. Earlier on Thursday, faculty members of IITK walked out of the meeting held by the committee members (Source: Hindustan Times)
Update 13: While HRD ministry is trying hard to convince IITs for common entrance exam (ISEET), IITs are still holding reservations about the new pattern. An IIT panel has already visited IIT-Kanpur and left for IIT-Bombay today as these institutes have expressed opposition to the proposed format. HRD Ministry intends to conduct the test under the new format on April 7, 2013, which will be conducted by the CBSE. The issue will be taken up with the Central Advisory Board of Education meeting that is slated to be held on April 23. (Sources: Times of India, Economic Times)
Update 14: IITB faculty suggests that the new common entrance test can be broken into two stages. In the first stage, the candidate can be filtered by including the criterion of board marks, and in the second stage, the candidate can be ranked for IIT admissions. (Source: DNA India)
Update 15: The ministry will reveal the details about the test on April 16th. “It is proposed that the JEE test will be conducted at least twice a year so that students who wish to attempt more than once can be allowed to do so in a year,” said a note from the MHRD, giving details of the admission procedure from 2013. There is some more information on how board exams marks will be considered for the weightage. The percentile rank of student in board exam will be included with JEE rank and will be calculated based on the scores obtained in the boards in physics, chemistry, mathematics, one language subject, and the best subject among the electives taken by the student. In addition to the marks in the three components (board exam, main test, advance test) a Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTI) rank will be given to each candidate. The rank will be determined according to the following weightage – board marks – 40%, main test – 30%, advance test – 30%. Admission to IITs, NITs and IIITs will be through a single window online counselling system based on the CFTI rank. (Source: Times of India)
Update 16 (April 12, 2012): Another meeting went inconclusive though both the sides (the ministry and IITs) maintained that the meeting went positive. (Source: Times of India, Economic Times). It may be noted that the IIT council gave its in principle approval for the new pattern but IIT senate has some objections regarding the same.
Update 17 (April 17, 2012): The central government has postponed a meeting of the nation’s highest education policy advisory body that was to decide on a combined entrance examination for all engineering colleges after the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) opposed a plan to scrap their 50-year-old joint entrance examination (JEE). (Source: Mint)
Update 18 (April 18, 2012): The final decision on the ISEET proposal will only happen by the end of May. The HRD Minister has asked Senates of all IITs to come up with their views on the proposed changes by May 10. Thereafter, by May 16 or 17, the IIT Council, the supreme government body, would prepare a draft consolidating the views of the different Senates. By the end of May, the IIT Council will meet with two faculty representatives from each Senate to finalise the proposal. (Source: IBNLive)
